Vortex of light
VORTEX is a new generative light sculpture built into the unique architecture of the Darwin ecosystem Project’s green building in Bordeaux, France.
Architectural fragment made from scaffolding, VORTEX has a raw wood skin highlighted by 12 lines of LED light as many generative and constructive project’s lines. Merging organic materials with new technologies, this hybrid architectural artwork wraps around and embraces the footbridge between the complex’s two buildings, revealing and enhancing the venue’s dynamic energy while working as a live visualizer of energy consumption.
The space as it was before:
LED lights behaviour is interactive: it is manually controllable through a joystick or synchronized to live music, beside visualizing the building energy consumption. Vortex is being conceptualized by the French firm 1024 architecture.
An interesting “mix media” work, that reminded us of two veeeeeery old Media Architecture workd by Jean Nouvel:
the Institut du Monde Arab in Paris, where the South façade is covered with photoelectric cells similar like diaphragm of cameras that interactively open and close depending on the external light, so to allow more light to get in when the sun light level decreases and vice-versa. A work that dates back to 1984 – can you believe that?
And the Opera Nouvel in Lyon, built between 1989 and 1993, with interactive lights placed under the roof, coreographed with the activity of the opera so that the building “communicates” to the city what it happening inside its walls:
