The suond of our lives as insidious health threat: Urban Noise Pollution
As little as 30 minutes in the New York subway may result in hearing loss. As my neighbor once memorably told me when I complained (gently, I thought) about some noise in our neighborhood, “that’s city livin’.
Is it really, and only, about unhealthy pollution? Or is it an unavoidable part of city life? According to R. Murray Schafer, father of the soundscape studies, noise in urban environment is only and truly a negative fall out of a distorted, dystopian modern world. But to a certain extent, it won’t be absolute silence that will save us but – as in many other cases – good design.
